Graphica

The Graphica series started as a material driven idea. I had found several long rolls of commercially printed paper at the local transfer station. My previous body of work entitled "Linear Collage" utilized hundreds of tiny fragments of photos to create an endless, twisting paper chain. Finding rolls with whole images that were eight by ten feet was mind boggling. In earlier work I avoided the surreal juxtaposition of found imagery in favor of accumulating mass produced images into an individual process of interpretation by reducing them into shape and color. In Graphica the same approach exists only on a different scale. The fragments are much larger yet remain cryptic. These sections serve as the ground for graphic images that are manufactured by hand. A tangible middle space seems to exist between the crude linoleum block prints on runny gesso and the highly polished imagery that was produced by a computer driven press.
